FUSION questionnaire and presentations

Dear FUSION user,

After the successful completion of the FUSION user workshop on May 19, 2010 in Berlin, Germany, we are now finalizing the analysis of user needs and issues discussed. As a result of the FUSION user workshop and questionnaire, new aspects surfaced and influenced the FUSION system design being considered.

We would like to take this opportunity and thank all of the workshop participants for their contributions. In case you did not have the chance to participate, we would like to direct your attention towards the Online questionnaire, where you still have the chance to express your remote sensing needs and wishes. This information will help us select the final system design of FUSION to best serve your interests.

QUESTIONNAIRE

The FUSION questionnaire will be Online for another two weeks. If you are interested in or already working with satellite imagery, please take 15 minutes to give your input at http://fusion-workshop.questionpro.com. Your feedback can be decisive!

WORKSHOP PRESENTATIONS

To provide you with more insight into the FUSION project and assist you in filling in the questionnaire, we are sharing with you the presentations of the FUSION user workshop speakers.

Do not hesitate to contact us with any question concerning the FUSION project or the questionnaire, we will be happy to assist you!

Sincerely,

Goetz Kornemann and Lilit Kocharyan

Deadline approaches: Register for the FUSION user workshop!

Dear Sir/Madam

The FUSION team cordially invites you to participate in the FUSION user workshop, which will be held on May 19, 2010 in Berlin, Germany.

BACKGROUND

FUSION is aiming to be the first satellite constellation combining high resolution satellite imagery as known from the RapidEye satellites with MIR/TIR data similar to what the BIRD infrared payload produces. Combining 6.5 m GSD VIS/NIR images with 100 m GSD infrared images, FUSION will provide worldwide daily revisit capability and new data products applicable for precision agriculture, food security, irrigation water management, inland water resource management, terrestrial ecosystem mapping, volcanology, and high resolution wildfire monitoring.

As FUSION has the potential to serve a wide variety of applications, we aim to optimise the set of requirements that will drive the system design. The workshop offers a unique opportunity for users to learn about FUSION, express your information needs, discuss your requirements and thus influence this mission right from the start.

WORKSHOP TRACKS

- Introduction to the FUSION project
- FUSION's high resolution earth observation capabilities
- FUSION's unique fire detection and monitoring features
- Participants' presentations and panel discussions

DATES & DEADLINES

If you are interested in participating, please fill in the attached registration form and send it back by May 10, 2010 via email or fax to Lilit Kocharyan (contact details below). If you are interested in participation, but the workshop date is inconvenient for you, please let us know, and we will consider additional dates.

YOUR INPUT

Your input is highly valuable to us. Even if you are unable to join us at the user workshop, we encourage you to let us know about your needs for earth observation data! Please, take a few moments to tell us your thoughts in this short survey: http://fusion-workshop.questionpro.com before 26 May, 2010. A snapshot of preliminary survey results are made public at http://fusion-workshop.blogspot.com. The interim results will also be discussed during the FUSION workshop, so your participation in the survey before the workshop will be influential.

Please feel free to forward this invitation to other people interested in satellite Earth Observation. For more information about the FUSION user workshop, please refer to the FUSION Technical Flyer or contact us.

Sincerely,

Goetz Kornemann and

FUSION Survey: First Results

FUSION user survey first results are already available. Below we publish a snapshop of the preliminary survey results and a PDF version can be downloaded here.

If you have not taken the survey yet, please do so at http://fusion-workshop.questionpro.com/. Your input is greatly appreciated and can help adapting FUSION to the needs of the community.

Participation
The survey participants are almost equally distributed between two fields of application: Agriculture & Irrigation water management (35 %) and Fires ( 39 %).

Usage of remote sensing data
Participants' usage of existing remote sensing data has been widespread, with Modis, Aster and Landsat being the systems most commonly used.

Importance of requirements
So far the survey shows that IR and VIS requirements are weighted almost equally. One can also see, that users do not want to compromise between ground sampling distance and revisit time.

Infrared Data

One major advantage of FUSION is the availability of infrared data. The answers so far show that there is a great interest in this special feature of FUSION.
Data usage
Results show that potential FUSION users require satellite data multiple times each year yielding a considerable market potential.

RapidEye Press Release: FUSION Team Holds User Workshop

Workshop In Berlin Next Month to Facilitate Discussions Amongst Earth Observation Imagery Users
GIS / Earth Observation / Satellite Images / Remote Sensing / Germany / Satellite Mission
Brandenburg / Havel, Germany, April 30, 2010
– The FUSION Team, consisting of seven parties including RapidEye AG with the Technical University of Berlin (TU) heading the project, has announced that their FUSION User Workshop will take place on May 19th in Berlin.
Funded by the Federal Republic of Germany and the Space Agency of the German Aerospace Center (DLR), the FUSION team is currently assessing a concept of a future satellite constellation which will combine the same radiometric and geometric capabilities of the RapidEye satellite constellation with the infrared sensor system based on the Bispectral InfraRed Detection (BIRD) micro-satellite. This fusion of optical and infrared data will allow the supply of new types of Earth observation products.
The FUSION User Workshop hosted by the Technical University in Berlin, will offer a unique opportunity for participants to learn about FUSION, express their needs, discuss their requirements and influence the mission design from the beginning. A full day of sessions are planned, including two parallel sessions with normal temperature applications and high temperature applications.
In addition, the FUSION team has compiled a survey and is kindly requesting all Earth observation data users to complete the survey, regardless of their participation in the workshop. This input will assist in determining the system requirements of the future FUSION constellation. To take part in the survey, please

Additional information about the workshop, including a registration form for the event can be found by visiting http://fusion-workshop.blogspot.com.
